Do These First
To enable Synology service on your account first you must enable compatibility by populating an 'rsyncd.conf' file in your account's root directory. An example config file already exists, all you need to do is rename it from 'example.rsyncd.conf' to 'rsyncd.conf':
ssh username@yourhost.rsync.net mv example.rsyncd.conf rsyncd.conf
You can also rename it while browsing your account with an SFTP client. If you do not have a copy of 'example.rsyncd.conf' you may download a copy locally, then upload it to your account.
On your end, please update your Synology device to the latest version of DSM (the firmware).
Setup is done through your Synology NAS web-based interface
On your Synology device, open the "Hyper Backup" app (previously named "Backup and Replication")
- the "Backup Wizard" should open automatically. If it does not, click the + icon in the lower left corner and select "Data backup task"
- under the "File Server" section, choose "rsync copy (single-version)", then click "Next"
- in the "Backup Destination Settings" screen enter:
Server type: rsync-compatible server Server name or IP address: YOURHOST.rsync.net Transfer encryption: "On" Port: 22 Username: (your username - 2 letters followed by 4 digits, or 4-5 digits) Password: (your storage account password) backup module: rsync (after entering your username and password, click the dropdown arrow and the list will auto-populate)- click "Next"
- in the "Data Backup" screen choose items for backup. Click "Next"

Task: (a descriptive name, ex: "rsync.net backup") Directory: (the folder inside your rsync.net account you want this backup data placed within- will be created if not pre-existing. Do not use a leading '/' in the directory name)- all checkboxes are optional.
- you will be asked if you want to run the "Back up now" - we suggest you say "Yes"
